HAFLONG, NOV 13, 2009: After a thorough introspection of the current situation of many indigenous tribal groups in Assam’s N.C. Hills district, NEICICDS is organising a legal awareness camp here on November 14.

2. Name of the Seminar: Legal Awareness among Indigenous Peoples of N. C. Hills, Assam.

5. Who will participate: Carefully selected local leaders (preferably in a 2:3 male and female ratio) from indigenous community or organization with special reference to the Kukis and Hmars from N. C. Hills, Assam.

Topics/ issues to be dealt by the Resource persons:
1. Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples in the Post- Modern World to be presented by Mr. Sanat Chakraborty
2. Basic Laws and Legal Defences to be presented by Ms V.S. Chingi. Advocate Guwahati High Court
Justification for organising the seminar:
1. Ignorance and lack of awareness of the indigenous populations on how to safeguard themselves by utilizing the various legal means available to them and constitutionally exercising their rights without violence.
2. The need to introduce and highlight the various regional, national and international legal mechanisms available for indigenous peoples.
3. The urgent need for initiating a grassroot level consultation on indigenous issues and on how to effectively pursue them while at the same time brings out the means and the tolls on how the indigenous peoples can be empowered further so that they can assert themselves effectively.
The Seminar will therefore aim at building up local capacities where appropriate legal mechanisms will be identified as per the participant’s experiences and realities that will be collected through intensive dialogues and sharing.
