IMPHAL, April 22, 2009: Manipur is the only state where the second phase elections are being held on Wednesday, while in the rest of the country it will be conducted on Thursday.
Voting for the second and final phase of parliamentary elections in Manipur was underway on Wednesday amid heavy security, officials said.
People in large numbers queued up in front of polling stations well before voting began at 7 a.m. for the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency.
Manipur is the only state where the second phase elections are being held Wednesday, while in the rest of the country it will be conducted Thursday.
The first phase vote for the Outer Manipur constituency was held April 16.
"Voting is going on peacefully. All measures have been taken to ensure free and fair polling," an election official said.
It is mainly a triangular contest between M. Nara of the Communist Party of India, T. Meinya of the Congress and Th Chaoba of Manipur People's Party although there are seven candidates in the fray.
A 825,019 strong electorate, including 434,000 women voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in 970 polling stations.
Moirang Assembly Constituency has the highest number of voters at 32,699 and Thanga Assembly Constituency has the lowest number of voters at 19,842.
Voting ends at 4 p.m.
