How Many Again?
There are 3,500 species of mosquitoes and around 200 of them live in the U.S. Yes, 200 different species of mosquitoes are residing in the United States.
If you live in West Virginia, you have the honor of living in the state with the fewest species, a small total of 26. On the other hand, a shout out to our Texan friends, because they have the most, rounding in at 85 different species.
Talk about Fast Maturation
Mosquitoes mature at an incredible speed. It takes as little as 5 days to go from egg to adult. Once they reach adulthood, they’ll live anywhere from 1 week to 8.
Females Reign Supreme
Females live longer than the males. They drink blood. And they fly into a swarm of males to mate. They don’t just sound bad, they are.Because female mosquitoes dine on our blood, they are also the ones to transmit mosquito-borne illnesses. Malaria and the West Nile virus are just 2 common diseases. But, there are plenty more.
Some infections humans get from mosquito bites can land them in the hospital with brain swelling. Children, seniors and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk. As the populations remain unchecked, mosquitoes will continue to cause misery to humankind.
That’s why mosquito control products are so important.
There’s Only Two Really Effective Ways to Protect Yourself
There are repellents and there’s extermination.Repellents, such as DEET, are great at keeping mosquitoes away from you over short periods of time. Not so great if you’re sensitive to chemicals. On the other hand, they make a mosquito catcher that lures them using carbon dioxide, sucks them up, then dehydrates them. These machines run continuously to the point they catch enough of these bugs that their breeding cycle is interrupted. Once that happens, there are fewer mosquitos and fewer chances of you being bitten.
What’s that Buzzing in My Ear?
If you hear a buzzing, it’s their wings flapping. And get this: when two mosquitoes come together to mate, they synchronize their wing flapping.
It’s Not Your Sweetness, It’s Your Sweatiness
Mosquitoes don’t go after you because you’re sweet. They go after you because you are sweaty and you expel carbon dioxide. They prefer heat and carbon dioxide over sweets.
