water harvesting india As it becomes ever more obvious that humanity must find a way to live sustainably, people have begun searching for answers to the question: what is living sustainably? The most important priority is to make sure that water is conserved. The aquifers underneath India are being depleted at a rapid and unsustainable rate.

This will put stress on agriculture, the economy, and related public health issues in the near future if it is not dealt with soon. Here is what you can do to make a difference.

  1. First, by some newer showerheads with a lower rate of water output and change them for your older, less efficient showerheads.
  2. Then, be sure to get a water efficient toilet. Find ones that use less water and each flush; some of the new dual flush toilets accomplish this.
  3. Put aerators and attach them to your faucet so that less water is used. Try to get it down to 8.4 litres per minute or even lower.
  4. Put waterless urinals in sheer bathrooms whenever possible. These work just as well and save a huge amount of water in the long run.
  5. Consider putting a system that manages pumping in so that water doesn't overflow and spill from any overhead tanks.
  6. When you buy a washing machine, take care and read the fine print so that you buy one that uses the least possible amount of water. Of course, make sure that it does a fine job of doing the dishes. However, water efficiency has vastly increased when it comes to washing machines. Also, if you can survive and thrive without a washing machine, consider doing so. This will save a lot of water usage over time.
  7. When it comes to landscaping, try to pick native plants and plants that do not require a large amount of water input in order for them to stay alive. Grass is a hugely inefficient plant that requires tons of water.
  8. Try to find a way to save rainwater so that you can water gardens or use it for any other project. You'd be surprised at how easy and cheap it is to rig together a system that controls runoff and directs it to large bins. If you have the money, you can even purify this rainwater and use it for drinking and cooking.
  9. Use grey water and treated so that you can use it in any of your irrigation projects. This makes it so that you don't have to stress other things like wall water, which helps conserve water in the long-run.
  10. Then, just pay attention to how much water you are using and all of your daily activities. Tried to cut out any and all unnecessary water use whenever possible.

These are small steps, but they are important if we are to make India into a sustainable country with a sensible and sustainable water use policy. I know that we can do it. India has faced and conquered far greater challenges than this.
