Liver has very high levels of the retinol form of vitamin A, which can be harmful to a developing baby, especially in the first trimester. The betacarotene form of vitamin A (which is plant based) is safe during pregnancy.
If you are trying to fall pregnant or are pregnant do not eat liver products.
The same applies with fish oil supplements. If the supplement is derived from the liver of the fish, such as cod liver oil, it contains the retinol form of Vitamin A and should be avoided when pregnant. If the supplement is derived from the body of the fish, it contains lots of essential fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids) which are good for your developing baby. Check that the supplement is suitable for pregnancy.
