New Delhi, Oct 15, 2009: It is the last place the average Delhiite would want to visit but Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit feels Tihar Jail is the "cleanest" place in the Capital.
Inaugurating the new interview room in jail number 1 of Tihar on Tuesday, Dikshit said, "After having a look at the premises, I think Tihar Jail is the cleanest place in Delhi. I praise the authorities for introducing so many facilities in the prison that any inmate could feel good."
The new interview room is meant for convenient interaction between inmates and visitors. The chief minister also visited the new Habib academy of hairstyling and inaugurated a new canteen in jail number 2.
Tihar's Director General (Prisons) B K Gupta said, "We want to keep up the good work for our inmates. We are on our way to make Tihar Jail one of the best prisons in the world."
Dikshit also inaugurated a new vocational training institute in jail number 2 to improve inmates' vocational skills and to prepare them for employment after release. The National Council for Vocational Training will award certificates to successful trainees.
Meanwhile, Gupta said the jail would soon introduce telephone facilities for inmates — they will now be able to use the facility once a week, under proper scrutiny.
The telephone facility already in place for the foreign inmates will now be extended to every inmate, he said.
A senior jail official said, "All calls will be under proper scrutiny and will be recorded. Anyone found carrying out a conversation that is not allowed would be exempted from the facility. Action will be taken against the inmate in that case."
