Bangalore: Sikpui Ruoi, a post harvest festival of the Hmar community, was celebrated here in India’s IT capital on December 4 with much fanfare.
The event, organised by Hmar Students’ Association (HSA) Bangalore Branch, was held at Lakshmi Party Hall in Kammanahalli, East Bangalore. The programme slated for 2 p.m began only at 4 p.m, but once the show was on, there was no looking back. Special numbers by some well known artistes like Rose Sakum, Ruoltinkhum Paruolte and others soon took away the drowsy mood.
The festival was opened with a prayer by Bangalore Hmar Chiristian Fellowship local pastor Rev Robert Vanlallien after which ‘Sikpui Pa’ Pu Jonathan Kungate said in his speech that Sikpui Ruoi was “celebrated right from our forefathers who underwent modifications year after year”.
“Today, instead of invoking evil spirits we are now celebrating this festival in a Christian manner,” he added.
In between the number of special numbers, cultural dance and fashion parade were presented by HSA members.
This year, the audience voted Nk Margret Kimnunmawi of Imphal as Miss Sikpui Ruoi while Tv John Lalsanglien Khobung of Shillong was selected as Mr. Sikpui Ruoi.
Prizes for the HSA Annual sports were also distributed on the occasion. Hmepawk Group got the first prize in the overall category.
Besides, Bangalore Hmar Directory 2010 booklet was released during the event.
The festival was closed by HSA adviser Pu Robert L. Sungte with a prayer at around 7.30 p.m after which a traditional feast – bawngsa chartang and arsa hmepawk - was taken by the people.
