Mizoram, then a Union territory, was upgraded into a full fledged statehood on February 20, 1987, following a historic peace accord signed between the Centre and the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF) on June 30, 1986 after Mizoram was reeling under insurgency for 20 years since 1966.
The provisions of the accord provided that Mizoram would be upgraded into statehood with certain safeguards.
The MNF cadres numbering more than 500 came overground after the accord was signed and the rebel leader the late Laldenga was installed as the chief minister of an interim government, a coalition of the MNF and the Congress party.
Laldenga and his MNF won the assembly polls in 1987 and the became the first state chief minister.
